I have found most students simply cannot comply with your suggestion of staying in touch with a guidance counselor. The response I usually get from students is the counselor's missed appointments, or too little time spent going over the college process. Let's hope these students can take the time to read your good directives, not to mention the challenge they have finding the "right" advice. Good advice.
